Disney is still considering Florence Pugh (Thunderbolts*, We Live in Time) for the role of Rapunzel in its live-action Tangled film. For several years, Pugh has been one of the top choices for the role.
According to Daniel Richtman in a post on his Patreon, “Disney is in talks with Florence Pugh to play the lead role of Rapunzel in the live-action Tangled film. She is expected to sign the deal soon.”
Back in 2023, Zachary Levi, who voiced Flynn Rider in the animated Tangled movie, said that Pugh is a great choice to play Rapunzel.
Levi said, “There was this thing floating around the internet—I just saw it, somebody sent it to me—that Florence Pugh potentially might play the role of Rapunzel. And if Florence plays Rapunzel, what about me? Which would also be a trip because my real last name is Pugh, P-U-G-H, Zachary Levi Pugh, so you’d have [makes pew-pew noise] in Tangled. Come on!”
Most recently, Agatha All Along star Kathryn Hahn was rumored to be cast as Mother Gothel in the movie. However, no official casting announcements have been made yet.
The live-action Tangled movie will be directed by Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) and the script is penned by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Do Revenge). It will be a modern retelling of the classic Rapunzel fairy tale by the Brothers Grimm—plot details are currently under wraps. The film is expected to follow a similar storyline to the animated version.
The film is produced by Kristin Burr for Burr! Productions, alongside Emmy-winning producer Lucy Kitada (The Baby-Sitters Club).
Tangled will begin production soon, with the release date expected to be announced around that time.
