Amazon’s God of War series is scheduled to begin filming in March 2026 in Vancouver, Canada. The show adapts the hit PlayStation video game series, following Kratos, a Spartan warrior turned god, on an epic mythological journey.
According to reports, casting for the series is currently underway. Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander) will serve as the showrunner, and the writers’ room features Matthew Graham (Electric Dreams, Spanish Princess), Stephanie Shannon (For All Mankind, Outlander), Narendra K. Shankar (The Expanse, For All Mankind), Joe Menosky (For All Mankind, Star Trek: Discovery), Marc D. Bernardin (The Continental, Star Trek: Picard), and Tania Lotia (The Witcher, The Mighty Nein).
According to film insider John Campea, a potential shortlist of actors has been revealed, though no studio has confirmed any casting decisions. In a recent YouTube discussion, Campea claimed to have heard from multiple sources about actors being considered for the role of Kratos. The shortlist is:
- Winston Duke (Black Panther, Us)
- Joe Manganiello (Justice League, True Blood)
- Christopher Judge (the voice of Kratos in the games)
- Manu Bennett (Arrow, Spartacus)
- Jason Momoa (Aquaman, Game of Thrones)
- Travis Fimmel (Vikings)
- Olivier Richters (The Dutch Giant)
The series will focus on the newer era of the God of War games, which began in 2018. This part of the series follows Kratos, a former Spartan warrior turned god, as he tries to live a quiet life with his son, Atreus. However, their quest for peace draws the attention of Odin and the other Norse gods. This era represents the second major chapter in the franchise. The earlier games, released between 2005 and 2015, told Kratos’ original story and his brutal war against the gods of Greek mythology.
During an interview with Collider, Moore revealed that the first season of Amazon’s God of War series will adapt the 2018 game across ten episodes.
Moore said, “We’re in the script phase. We’re still working on the scripts. It’s going very well. We’ve got a good team. It’s been a fascinating thing to sink my teeth into.” He added, “I’ve never done an adaptation of a video game, and the deeper I got into it, the more impressed I was with the breadth and depth of the mythology involved in this video game.”
In an interview with IGN at San Diego Comic-Con 2025, Ronald D. Moore explained the vision for the upcoming series.
“The tone of the show aims to mirror that of the game — an epic journey rooted in a heartfelt story about two men setting out to honor the memory of Atreus’ mother, Kratos’ wife. It carries a deep emotional core, exploring Kratos’ mysterious past, the weight of his history, and the emotions he struggles with. At the same time, it’s not so heavy that it loses its sense of adventure. There will be moments of wonder, spectacle, and excitement throughout this richly imagined world.”
The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Santa Monica Studio.
