The first episode of It: Welcome to Derry has started streaming on HBO. Following the premiere, new spoiler details for the show have been revealed. Welcome to Derry focuses on a group of children including Phil Malkin, Teddy Uris, Lilly Bainbridge, Marge, Rich, and Will Hanlon who investigate the disappearance of Matty Clements.
Lilly is nicknamed “Looney Lilly” due to trauma from her father’s death in a pickle factory. Will is the son of Leroy Hanlon, an Air Force pilot who works under General Shaw. Bill Skarsgård reprises his role as Pennywise.
The premise of Welcome to Derry involves Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk), whose psychic abilities are being used by General Shaw to locate a “weapon” buried somewhere in Derry. Specifically, the U.S. military plans to capture Pennywise and use him against the Russians and Cubans to prevent the impending Cuban Missile Crisis and win the Cold War.

To control the monster, whom they barely understand, they must acquire the 13 fragments of “pillar” rock from the “cage” through which he traveled to Earth millions of years ago. These fragments have the power to contain him, Kryptonite-style, and their whereabouts have been protected for centuries by a Native American tribe that has served as humanity’s selfless guardians. Leroy Hanlon appears to be the key to this covert plan, as he has suffered a brain injury that left him unable to feel fear.
The show was developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, all of whom were involved in the It films. It is based on Stephen King‘s 1986 novel It and serves as a prequel to the films It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019).
