The premise of Welcome to Derry involves Dick Hallorann (Chris Chalk), whose psychic abilities are being used by General Shaw to locate a “weapon” buried somewhere in Derry. Specifically, the U.S. military plans to capture Pennywise and use him against the Russians and Cubans to prevent the impending Cuban Missile Crisis and win the Cold War.

To control the monster, whom they barely understand, they must acquire the 13 fragments of “pillar” rock from the “cage” through which he traveled to Earth millions of years ago. These fragments have the power to contain him, Kryptonite-style, and their whereabouts have been protected for centuries by a Native American tribe that has served as humanity’s selfless guardians. Leroy Hanlon appears to be the key to this covert plan, as he has suffered a brain injury that left him unable to feel fear.

The show was developed by Andy Muschietti, Barbara Muschietti, and Jason Fuchs, all of whom were involved in the It films. It is based on Stephen King‘s 1986 novel It and serves as a prequel to the films It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019).

The cast of It: Welcome to Derry includes Taylour Paige as Charlotte Hanlon, Jovan Adepo as Leroy Hanlon, James Remar as General Shaw, Stephen Rider as Hank Grogan, Matilda Lawler as Marge, Amanda Christine as Ronnie Grogan, Clara Stack as Lilly Bainbridge, Blake Cameron James as Will Hanlon, Arian S. Cartaya as Rich, Miles Ekhardt as Matty Clements, Mikkal Karim-Fidler as Teddy Uris, Jack Molloy Legault as Phil Malkin, Matilda Legault as Susie Malkin, Chris Chalk as Dick Hallorann, Madeleine Stowe, and Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise.

Recurring cast members include Rudy Mancuso as Captain Pauly Russo, Dean Yool, Alixandra Fuchs, Kimberly Norris Guerrero as Rose, Tyner Rushing, Dorian Grey, Thomas Mitchell, BJ Harrison, Peter Outerbridge, Shane Marriott, Chad Rook, Joshua Odjick, and Morningstar Angeline.

Welcome to Derry is now available on HBO.
