Warning: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Doomsday.
A new report revealed that the X-Men universe in Avengers: Doomsday is a variant timeline where events similar to the original X-Men trilogy and Days of Future Past have occurred.
According to insider Alex P (via The Cosmic Circus), in Avengers: Doomsday, the X-Men universe we see is a variant world that looks like a utopia for humans and mutants. But that peaceful reality exists because of major sacrifices made in the past.
The Manhattan imagery represents the cost of creating that world. The core theme of Doomsday is sacrifice, what every side (Avengers, X-Men, Doom, Loki, TVA, etc.) is willing to give up to protect what they love.

Also, Avengers: Doomsday is about the cost of success and survival, not just heroism.
In Doomsday, the X-Men universe we get to see in the movie is a variant universe where events similar to that of the OG trilogy + DOFP occurred, just to make it simpler for the audience to not do that much homework. What is new, is that this universe exists as a utopia for humans and mutants. But you have to wonder…what exactly happened prior to that that allowed this utopia to exist? What sacrifices had to be made for the greater good? And that question is the general motif of Doomsday. Not just for Magneto, but Sam, his Avengers, The Thunderbolts*, The Wakandans, the X-Men, the Fantastic Four, Steve Rogers, Thor, Loki, the TVA, the variants we see in this movie and most of all Doom. What would you be willing to sacrifice to gain what you want? To succeed? To save the ones you love? Your morals? Your beliefs? Your powers? Your mortality? Your life? The question isn’t are you prepared to die? The question is, who will you be, when you close your eyes?
Recently, Ian McKellen accidentally revealed that Magneto destroys New Jersey in the X-Men universe in Avengers: Doomsday because he reversed Earth’s magnetic poles.
Directed by the Russo brothers from a screenplay by their longtime collaborator Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron.
