The first look at James McAvoy as Felix McAveety, the drug addict–turned–amateur detective, on the set of Frankie Boyle’s Meantime adaptation has been revealed.
While filming in Glasgow, Metro.co.uk shared set images of McAvoy looking disheveled and almost unrecognizable in the role. He is seen wearing a creased grey suit with a beige shirt, as well as casual grey jogging bottoms with a knitted jumper in other scenes.
The series is based on Boyle’s debut novel, released in 2022. The story follows Felix as he investigates the murder of his best friend in a park in Glasgow.
In the story, Felix becomes a suspect in the police investigation and begins his own search for the killer with help from his neighbor Donnie.
The series is being produced for Sky, with Jon S. Baird set to direct and Neil Webster writing the screenplay, which is adapted from the crime novel Meantime by Frankie Boyle.
Set in Glasgow in 2015, Meantime follows Valium addict Felix McAveety after his best friend, Marina, is found murdered in a local park. Searching for answers he often forgets, Felix begins his own investigation and teams up with his crisis-driven neighbor Donnie — a brilliant but unpredictable general practitioner — along with a group that includes a young trade unionist, a struggling screenwriter, and semi-celebrity crime novelist Jane Pickford. Their investigation turns into a strange journey involving Scottish radical politics, artificial intelligence, cults, secret agents, smugglers, and even vegan record shops.
James McAvoy recently starred in Speak No Evil, The Book of Clarence, and the HBO series His Dark Materials. He will next appear in Pose and the biographical drama California Schemin, which also marks his directorial debut.
Meantime is set to be released in 2027.
