Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Zach Cregger‘s Resident Evil reboot. Set during the events of Resident Evil 2 in Raccoon City, the film follows a regular man using a POV style that blends first-person action with wide-angle shots, while including Easter eggs like weapon progression and creature mechanics from the games.

The trailer follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a frightened medical courier who enters what appears to be an abandoned house to use a landline after running into trouble on the road.

“Hey babe, look, I’m really sorry we got disconnected earlier, but some things have happened,” Bryan tells a loved one over the phone. “I’m in a seriously messed-up situation right now, and it looks like there’s a chance we might not get to talk to each other again.”
From the mind of visionary filmmaker Zach Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) comes a thrilling — and terrifying — reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise. In an all-new story, Resident Evil follows Bryan (Austin Abrams), a medical courier who unwittingly finds himself in an action-packed, non-stop race for survival as one fateful, horrifying night collapses around him in chaos.
Speaking to IGN, Cregger said he imagines his Resident Evil film as taking place during the events of Resident Evil 2.
“I feel like this movie takes place alongside the events of RE 2. I like to think that everything happening in the police station could be happening in this world. This is just another guy on another mission on the other side of town.”
Directed by Cregger, who co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, the film serves as the second reboot of the Resident Evil film series. It is the eighth installment overall in the franchise, which is based on the video game series by Capcom.
The film also stars Paul Walter Hauser, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Johnno Wilson.
Produced by Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions, in association with Constantin Film and Vertigo Entertainment.
Resident Evil will hit theaters on September 18, 2026, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
