Since Sony’s live-action Spider-Man Universe (SSU) has come to an end, the studio’s previous plans to merge it with the MCU have also been abandoned. Following the continued box office failures of its SSU films, Sony decided to stop developing future movies in the franchise. However, Sony still has its deal with Marvel and keeps the Spider-Man rights as long as it releases a new Spider-Man movie at least once every five years.
In a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused, Tom Holland, who appeared to promote Spider-Man: Brand New Day, revealed that Sony once planned to merge its Spider-Man spin-off universe with the MCU. He said the crossover idea “was on the cards” but never moved forward.
According to Holland, Sony and Marvel never found the right time to connect the two universes. He also said he was never forced to appear in a movie he didn’t want to make.
He said, “I think that they just never found the right time to do so. I think it was on the cards … But there was never any time where I was being forced into a movie I didn’t want to be in.”
Holland says he isn’t sure how Marvel would adapt the Symbiote suit in the MCU. According to Holland, recreating the suit in live-action without relying heavily on CGI would be difficult. He also praised the Symbiote suit’s portrayal in the Spider-Man video game.
“They did it so well in the game, and I don’t know how you make a suit that’s similar without having a CG component.”
Marvel Cut Tom Holland’s Man-Spider Idea From Spider-Man: Brand New Day
There was a concept that Holland pitched to the studio for a Man-Spider transformation in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The idea included nightmare sequences in which Peter Parker wakes up as Man-Spider. However, the concept was scrapped during development.
Holland said, “We explored the nightmare sequences of him waking up as the Man-Spider, and very quickly we were like, ‘We do want children to enjoy this movie as well as adults.'”
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken the record for the biggest Thursday preview ever, earning $74.5 million domestically and beating Avengers: Endgame. It is now projected to open to more than $900 million worldwide.
After the record-breaking global success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Spider-Man: Brand New Day marks an entirely new chapter for Peter Parker and Spider-Man.
Four years have passed since the events of No Way Home, and Peter is now an adult living entirely alone, having voluntarily erased himself from the lives and memories of those he loves. Crime-fighting in a New York that no longer knows his name, he’s devoted himself entirely to protecting his city — a full-time Spider-Man — but as the demands on him intensify, the pressure sparks a surprising physical evolution that threatens his existence, even as a strange new pattern of crimes gives rise to one of the most powerful threats he has ever faced.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers. The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, with Zendaya and Jacob Batalon reprising their roles as MJ Watson and Ned Leeds. Sadie Sink as Jean Grey alongside Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle (a.k.a. The Punisher) and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/The Hulk, Liza Colón-Zayas and Tramell Tillman, while Michael Mando returns as Mac Gargan from Spider-Man: Homecoming and Marvin Jones III as Tombstone.
The film is produced by Amy Pascal, Rachel O’Connor, Feige, Louis D’Esposito, and Mitch Bell.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters.
