Zack Snyder Says His Director’s Cut of Sucker Punch Is “Definitely on the Docket”

Zack Snyder’s movies often get more audience love and attention through his director’s cuts. His creative freedom as a director is sometimes overtaken by the studio, which can result in many scenes being cut. The Justice League movie originally developed by Snyder received an overwhelming response from DC fans compared to the 2017 studio version of Justice League. His Netflix movie Rebel Moon was also released in both Part One and Part Two director’s cuts.

Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast while promoting his new film The Last Photograph at the Toronto International Film Festival, Snyder shared an important update about his 2011 film Sucker Punch. Snyder confirmed that he is in active discussions with Warner Bros. about releasing a director’s cut of the film.

Snyder confirmed that his director’s cut of Sucker Punch is “definitely on the docket” for the future. He also confirmed that it will require bringing back the original cast, including Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac, and Jon Hamm, for some additional recording work.

He said, “I would love that. It’s just one of those things where every time I call over to Warner Bros. to say, ‘Okay, we should do the director’s cut of Sucker Punch,’ because obviously there’s a lot of conversation.”

He explained the licensing challenges, saying, “There are all these weird things where you have to wait for some licenses to completely finish because if, say, I’ve bought the original Sucker Punch or whatever, or one of the versions, and I’m showing it on my streaming service or somewhere, and then I release the director’s cut, apparently that diminishes the value of the thing that I bought. And so, I don’t know. That’s what I’ve been told.”

Snyder added, “But on the docket one day. Definitely on the docket. Yeah. Okay, I’ve got to get the girls back for a couple of little ADR sessions here and there, too.”

Snyder’s The Last Photograph, starring Stuart Martin and Fra Fee, follows a former DEA agent who ventures into a South American jungle seeking revenge, where the harsh landscape is intertwined with his personal struggles. The film’s theatrical release date is TBA.
