Street Fighter is now playing in theaters and has opened with $51 million worldwide. The film has received a 79% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a B- CinemaScore.
Callina Liang, who plays Chun-Li in the movie, has opened up about her training for the film.
In a recent interview, Liang revealed that she trained for four hours a day over six weeks, using resistance bands on her legs to master balance and precision for her role as Chun-Li. She initially trained for two hours every day before traveling to Australia, where she increased her training to four hours daily for six weeks before filming the action sequences began.

Liang trained with resistance bands around her legs and practiced balancing on one leg while repeatedly kicking. Her training included spinning kicks, jumping kicks, and various other kicking techniques.
Liang said, “Two hours of training every single day before I got to Australia, and then it was four hours every day for six weeks before we set action on camera. You know, my trainers were telling me, they were like, ‘It’s actually harder to make it look like you’re a pro at kicking than if you were to, you know, play a boxer.'”
Liang added, “It’s easier to look like you’re a pro at boxing. I’m like, ‘Okay, great, so let’s work even harder.’ I learned so much. I think reps just really helped me out. I had resistance bands on my legs, and I just had to learn how to balance on the one leg I was kicking with, in and out, just all the time, learning cool moves. I fell a couple of times, too, I remember. I just… I had bruises all over me, but, like, the spinning kicks, jumping kicks, all sorts of kicks. And it helped with bulking up my legs because ultimately all I was working on was my legs. So it just… it went hand in hand, whether I liked it or not. So, yeah, but I found it very therapeutic, and now I keep up with the training. It’s a part of my life now. It’s great.”
Liang went all in to play Chun-Li in Street Fighter, eating 12 eggs and 4,000 calories a day while training daily. She gained 20 pounds in just six weeks.
Directed by Kitao Sakurai, Street Fighter is written by Sakurai and T. J. Fixman, with a story by Dalan Musson and Gary Dauberman. The film marks the third live-action feature-length adaptation of Capcom’s popular video game franchise.
