Missed the Mark: Knights of the Zodiac’s Live-Action Adaptation Falls Flat

Knights of the Zodiac, the live-action adaptation of the popular anime series Saint Seiya, attempts to capture the essence of its source material but falls short in some key areas. While the film exhibits a genuine effort to pay homage to the original story, it ultimately fails to generate the excitement and visual grandeur necessary to justify future sequels.

Knights of the Zodiac Review

Directed by Tomasz Baginski, the film’s visuals often feel lackluster and fail to deliver the awe-inspiring spectacle that fans of the anime might expect. The special effects, in particular, leave much to be desired and are occasionally clunky, diminishing the impact of crucial action sequences. This deficiency detracts from the overall experience and prevents the film from reaching its full potential.

However, despite these setbacks, Knights of the Zodiac manages to provide solid entertainment, particularly for those seeking an enjoyable popcorn flick. The film maintains a brisk pace and incorporates over-the-top fun elements, capturing some of the original anime’s spirit and tone. While it may not be a perfect adaptation, it succeeds in delivering a passable cinematic experience.

The story follows Seiya (played by Mackenyu), a headstrong street teen on a quest to find his abducted sister. After unintentionally accessing mystical powers during a fight, Seiya discovers a world of warring saints, ancient magical training, and a reincarnated goddess in need of his protection. To survive, he must embrace his destiny and make significant sacrifices to claim his rightful place among the Knights of the Zodiac.

KNIGHTS OF THE ZODIAC trailer

Critics have given the live-action adaptation a lukewarm reception, as evidenced by its initial 17% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Some argue that Knights of the Zodiac exemplifies the pitfalls of translating an anime TV series into a poorly acted live-action movie, resulting in cringe-worthy performances that even die-hard fans may find hard to endure. Comparisons have been drawn to low-quality video games that offer more engaging and entertaining experiences.

In conclusion, Knights of the Zodiac presents a mixed bag as a live-action adaptation. While it falls short in terms of visual effects and storytelling execution, it manages to deliver enjoyable entertainment with a sense of fun and nods to the original anime. Die-hard fans of the franchise may find some redeeming qualities, but for those unfamiliar with the source material, it may be a forgettable and lackluster experience.

Our rating for Knights of the Zodiac is [25/100]: Disappointing Flop.
