British actress and singer Jane Birkin, a 1960s and 70s style icon, died at her Paris home at 76. She was known for her French singing and inspired a high-end handbag named after her. The French Culture Ministry called her a timeless Francophone icon. Birkin’s musical collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg included the explicit song “Je T’Aime… Moi Non Plus” (“I Love You… Me Neither”).

French media reported that Jane Birkin was found dead at her home in Paris. According to the French newspaper Le Figaro, she had been facing health issues in recent years, which limited her public appearances and performances. Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo expressed her condolences, referring to Birkin as the “most Parisian of the English.” Hidalgo praised Birkin for her songs, laughter, and unique accent, which had a lasting impact on people. Birkin, who had been living in France since the late 1960s, was cherished not only for her artistic contributions but also for her warm personality and advocacy for women’s and LGBTQ+ rights.

Who Is Jane Birkin?

Jane Birkin was born on December 14, 1946, in London, England. Birkin gained international fame in the 1960s and 1970s for her work as an actress and her collaboration with French singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. Birkin began her acting career in the mid-1960s, appearing in various British films such as “Blowup” (1966) and “Wonderwall” (1968). Her breakthrough role came in 1969 when she starred in the controversial film “La Piscine” alongside Alain Delon. Her performance in the film garnered critical acclaim and established her as a talented actress.

However, it was her musical collaboration with Serge Gainsbourg that brought her widespread recognition. The duo recorded the provocative and iconic song “Je t’aime… moi non plus” in 1969, which became an international hit despite being banned in several countries due to its explicit content. Birkin and Gainsbourg continued to work together on multiple albums, including “Histoire de Melody Nelson” (1971), which is considered a classic of French pop music.
