An update on Christopher Nolan‘s next movie, starring Tom Holland (Spider-Man: No Way Home, Uncharted) and Matt Damon (Oppenheimer, Ford v Ferrari), has been received from Production Weekly.
According to the source, Nolan’s new movie is about “a pair of aerial helicopter cops, featuring an older mentor (Damon) and a younger lead (Holland).”
So, this confirms the rumor that the film is inspired by Blue Thunder and will be set in a futuristic New York.
This film is said to be a New York-based futuristic action story about a helicopter pilot cop who heads up the Aviation Unit in the U.S., focusing on the creation of a highly advanced—yet dangerous—helicopter that is being pursued by terrorists. Instead of circulating a screenplay to key personnel, Nolan has ensured they each received high-quality versions of the 1983 movie Blue Thunder—which starred Roy Scheider and was directed by John Badham—along with various written materials related to that film.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Holland confirmed that he is starring in Nolan’s next movie. ‘All I can say is that I’m incredibly excited,’ Holland said about acting for Nolan. ‘And I’m obviously honored, but that’s all I can say because, to be honest, that’s all I know.’
“When the opportunity came in, it was the phone call of a lifetime,” Holland added. “It was reminiscent of getting the call about Spider-Man 10 years ago. It’s an amazing thing for me. I’m super proud, and I’m really, really excited.”
Filming will begin in early 2025. Nolan will produce alongside his producing partner and wife, Emma Thomas, under their Syncopy banner.
The untitled movie is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2026, and will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
