Dakota Johnson About the Failure of ‘Madame Web’
Speaking to Bustle, Johnson addressed the failure and bad reviews of ‘Madame Web’.
Johnson said, “It’s so hard to get movies made, and in these big movies that get made—and it’s even starting to happen with the little ones, which is what’s really freaking me out—decisions are being made by committees, and art does not do well when it’s made by committee. Films are made by a filmmaker and a team of artists around them.” Johnson added, “You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullsh*t.”
‘Madame Web’ has received a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 3.8/10 rating on IMDb, and has earned a C+ CinemaScore.
Johnson continued, “It was definitely an experience for me to make that movie. I had never done anything like it before. I probably will never do anything like it again because it doesn’t make sense in that world. And I know that now. But sometimes in this industry, you sign on to something, and it’s one thing, and then as you’re making it, it becomes a completely different thing, and you’re like, Wait, what? But it was a real learning experience, and of course it’s not nice to be a part of something that’s ripped to shreds, but I can’t say that I don’t understand.”
The worldwide box office earnings for ‘Madame Web’ have reached $91 million, positioning it as one of the lower-grossing films in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The film’s budget was $80 million.
Directed by S. J. Clarkson from a screenplay by Burk Sharpless and Matt Sazama. The film is the sixth installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The film stars Johnson as Madame Web, Sydney Sweeney as Julia Cornwall, Celeste O’Connor, and Isabela Merced, Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims, Emma Roberts, Mike Epps, Adam Scott, and Zosia Mamet.
According to the film’s plot: Meanwhile, in another universe… In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures—if they can all survive a deadly present.
The DVD and Blu-Ray release date for Sony’s ‘Madame Web’ is April 30, 2024.
