Sony Pictures has released the first trailer for Darren Aronofsky‘s Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler as a hard-luck former ballplayer who becomes the target of various underworld thugs and sociopaths, with the story unraveling the strange details. Watch the trailer below.
Here are the plot details for Caught Stealing:
Hank Thompson (Austin Butler) was a high school baseball phenom who can’t play anymore—but everything else is going okay. He’s got a great girl (Zoë Kravitz), tends bar at a New York dive, and his favorite team is making an underdog run at the pennant.
When his punk-rock neighbor Russ (Matt Smith) asks him to take care of his cat for a few days, Hank suddenly finds himself caught in the middle of a motley crew of threatening gangsters. They all want a piece of him—the problem is, he has no idea why. As Hank tries to evade their ever-tightening grip, he’ll have to use all his hustle to stay alive long enough to find out…
Directed by Academy Award® nominee Aronofsky, with a screenplay by Charlie Huston based on his novel of the same name, the film stars Butler as Hank Thompson, Kravitz as Yvonne, Regina King as Roman, Smith as Russ, Liev Schreiber, Will Brill as Jason, Bad Bunny as Colorado, Griffin Dunne as Paul, Vincent D’Onofrio, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Dale, Action Bronson, and George Abud.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Darren Aronofsky opened up about the risks of shooting on location, revealing that they filmed in New York’s East Village. “It’s just filled with oddballs,” Aronofsky said. He says that the East Village is full of unique characters—“oddballs”—and that’s exactly what makes it the perfect setting for this kind of story.
Aronofsky said, “The thing about the East Village is that there’s so many of those great kind of characters.” Aronofsky added, “It’s just filled with oddballs, this movie. And that’s kind of my experience and why I love the East Village so much. It’s just such a magnet for that, still to this day.”
Produced by Aronofsky alongside his Protozoa Pictures partner, Ari Handel.
Caught Stealing will hit theaters in the United States on August 29, 2025, by Sony Pictures Releasing.
