Power Rangers live-action series

A live-action Power Rangers series is being developed for Disney+ and 20th Century TV.

TheWrap report revealed that Percy Jackson showrunners Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz are in talks to write, showrun, and produce.

Hasbro Entertainment will produce the series, reinventing the franchise for a new generation while honoring longtime fans.

Power Rangers live-action series

The Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers TV show from the 1990s was based on the Japanese series Super Sentai and even used some of its footage. It followed five teenagers who could “morph” into superheroes called Power Rangers, each with their own giant robot fighters. A movie with most of the original cast was released in 1995, and another one followed in 1997 with only a few returning actors.

Over the years, the Power Rangers franchise has had many different versions. In 2017, Lionsgate and Saban Films tried to reboot it as a darker, teen-focused movie, but it did not do well, earning $142 million on a $100 million budget, ending plans for a bigger franchise.

Hasbro bought Power Rangers in 2018 to grow the franchise across all its divisions. Hasbro Entertainment’s goal is to create better stories and make new series based on its most popular brands by working with top talent, studios, and streaming platforms. Besides Power Rangers, Hasbro Entertainment is working on several film and TV projects. These include a new version of Clue for both film and TV with Sony’s TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Television, and a live-action Dungeons & Dragons: Forgotten Realms series at Netflix, with Shawn Levy as executive producer.

An animated Magic: The Gathering series is also in production at Netflix, led by showrunner Terry Matalas, along with a major live-action Magic: The Gathering film and TV universe created with Legendary Entertainment. Hasbro has also made game shows based on Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble, both of which premiered on The CW in the fall.

It is reported that the Power Rangers series will soon begin production, with the release date yet to be announced (TBA).
