Fox McCloud was originally introduced in the 1993 SNES title Star Fox and has since appeared in multiple entries, including Star Fox 64, Star Fox Adventures, Star Fox: Assault, Star Fox: Command, and the 2017 release Star Fox 2.

We previously reported that Illumination and Nintendo are building a shared movie universe centered on Mario and his friends. A Donkey Kong movie is already in active development, while Luigi’s Mansion and a Princess Peach spinoff are also in the works. The plan is to introduce more Nintendo characters through their own films — all leading up to a massive Super Smash Bros. movie event.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is an animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros. and serves as a follow-up to The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which earned more than $1.3 billion worldwide. Both the 2023 film and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie are produced by Chris Meledandri of Illumination and Shigeru Miyamoto of Nintendo.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is directed by returning filmmakers Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, from a screenplay by returning writer Matthew Fogel, with Brian Tyler returning to compose the score.

Synopsis: Mario and Luigi join up with Princess Peach, Yoshi, and Toad on a quest into the far reaches of space and across the galaxy in order to face against Bowser Jr., Bowser’s son who plans to retrieve and free his father from being shrunken and imprisoned.

The film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Donald Glover as Yoshi, Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad (Captain Toad), Brie Larson as Rosalina, Jack Black as Bowser, Kenny James as Bowser (archive roars and grunts), Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, Juliet Jelenic as Lumalee, Luis Guzmán as King Wart, Issa Rae as Honey Queen, and Ed Skudder as R.O.B., with TBA roles including Lumas, Fox McCloud, Birdo, and Mouser.

The film will be co-financed by Universal Pictures and Nintendo and will be released worldwide by Universal Pictures.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released in U.S. theaters on April 1, 2026, by Universal Pictures.
