Marvel Gave Don Cheadle A Surprise Contract Time
Don Cheadle, who played the role of James Rhodes/War Machine in the MCU films revealed that while he was at his kid’s birthday party, Marvel offered him a six-movie deal, and he had only two hours to decide. Cheadle has been with Marvel for 13 years, beginning with Iron Man 2 and still continuing with the standalone film “Armor Wars.”
In an interview with GQ magazine, Cheadle explained how he took over the role of James Rhodes (War Machine) from Terrence Howard in the MCU. He said, “I was at my kid’s laser tag birthday party.” Cheadle added, “They called me and said, ‘This is what’s happening, and we’re giving you the offer. If you don’t say yes, then we’re going to the next person. This is going to happen very fast. Why don’t you take an hour and decide if you want to do it.’ It was a six-movie deal! In an hour I have to decide?”
Cheadle had two hours to sign a contract with Marvel for six movies before the time ran out. That was so quick and also a jackpot. Cheadle was informed by Marvel that “It’s going to be these Avengers, and this is what it is, so you have to say yes or no.”
When asked about the role, Marvel told Cheadle, “We don’t know any of that, but this is what it is so you’ve got an hour.”

It’s impossible to imagine Rhodey without Tony Stark. After Stark’s death in Avengers: Endgame, Spymaster steals his technology and sells it to various villains who use their own armored suits. These villains then integrate Stark’s designs into their own technology, forcing Rhodey to intervene. The main plot of “Armor Wars” will revolve around this. “In every successive film, he’s coming more and more out of Tony’s shadow and becoming his own person,” Cheadle said. “But we still haven’t explored who he is and really dug into that yet. That’s what the movie is for.”
