Emilia Clarke (‘Secret Invasion’, ‘Game of Thrones’) is set to star in the upcoming espionage thriller series ‘Ponies‘—which has been ordered straight to series by Peacock. Clarke will also serve as an executive producer on the series—in addition to starring.
The show is co-created by Susanna Fogel (‘The Flight Attendant,’ ‘The Spy Who Dumped Me’) and David Iserson. Fogel will also direct the series, while Iserson will serve as the showrunner.
Here’s the synopsis for Ponies:
Moscow, 1977. Two ‘Ponies’ (‘persons of no interest’ in intelligence speak) work anonymously as secretaries in the American Embassy. That is until their husbands are killed under mysterious circumstances in the USSR, and the pair become CIA operatives. Bea (Clarke) is an over-educated, Russian-speaking child of Soviet immigrants. Her cohort, Twila, is a small-town girl who is as abrasive as she is fearless. Together, they work to uncover a vast Cold War conspiracy and solve the mystery that made them widows in the first place.
Jessica Rhoades will executive produce under her Pacesetter Productions banner. Alison Mo Massey from Pacesetter will co-executive produce alongside Katherine Bridle. ‘Ponies’ is now the second espionage thriller series that Peacock has commissioned this year.
Emilia Clarke is best known for playing Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s ‘Game of Thrones,’ earning four Emmy nominations during its eight-season run. This is her second TV role in recent months, following her appearance in Marvel’s ‘Secret Invasion.’ Clarke has also starred in films such as ‘Me Before You,’ ‘Last Christmas,’ ‘The Pod Generation,’ ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ and ‘Terminator Genisys.’ In 2022, she made her West End debut in ‘The Seagull.’ Clarke will next be seen in the Amazon series ‘Criminal.’
The series will be produced by Universal Television.
