Nicholas Hoult secures the role of Lex Luthor in James Gunn‘s ‘Superman: Legacy,’ ultimately chosen over Bradley Cooper, who was initially approached for the iconic villain.
In May 2023, THR reported Hoult’s potential consideration for the role of Superman in Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy.’ However, the official casting announcement revealed David Corenswet as the chosen Superman/Clark Kent, with Rachel Brosnahan taking on the role of Lois Lane in Gunn’s ‘Superman: Legacy.’
Hoult continues the legacy of iconic actors, including Gene Hackman, Kevin Spacey, and Jesse Eisenberg, who have previously portrayed Lex Luthor in the Warner Bros. Superman franchise.
When does filming for ‘Superman: Legacy’ begin?
The filming will begin in January 2024 in Atlanta as the main location, while the upcoming DCU projects will focus on filming in London.
María Gabriela de Faría Joins ‘Superman: Legacy’ as Angela Spica/The Engineer, as the Villain Team Takes Shape
María Gabriela de Faría has been cast as Angela Spica/The Engineer in ‘Superman: Legacy’. On Instagram, Gunn said he is not a fan of calling María Gabriela de Faria a villain and says the actor is “not only a wonderful actor, but she laughs in person even more than she does in her IG feed!” Welcome to the DCU, María.
According to The Flash Film News, María Gabriela De Faría immediately bought a Superman cape and sent her parents a Superman action figure to Venezuela the moment she found out she was playing The Engineer for James Gunn’s Superman Legacy.

As for the DCU, Gunn said, “Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year—a sort of aperitif to the DCU—and then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that. It’s a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it’s okay to be confused on what’s happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet.” Gunn added, “And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they’ve played in other stories, and some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows, and animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until CC and Legacy.”
Gunn confirmed that he respects old Superman movies and that the script he made was definitely a sincere superhero movie. The film will be the DC Universe’s first film and the third installment of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, created by Gunn and Peter Safran.
‘Superman: Legacy’ follows the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice, and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.
‘Superman: Legacy’ will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.
