Lanterns centers on Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) and John Stewart (Pierre), who are two members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic team charged with defending a specific realm of the cosmos from evil through the use of rings that bestow an array of superhuman powers. The logline describes new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

According to Entertainment Weekly, Nathan Fillion will return as Guy Gardner in Superman and will also appear in DC Studios’ Lanterns series.

DC boss James Gunn told Screen Rant, ‘It’s really so cool because it is connected to Superman—we’ve got Guy Gardner in that, and then we’ve got these Green Lanterns over here.’ Gunn added, ‘It’s just such a different tone from what Superman is, and it’s exactly what I want to bring to the DCU: being able to have these very different films and television series that are still part of an overall connected world but have completely different feels to them.’

The show stars Chandler as Hal Jordan, Pierre as John Stewart, Kelly Macdonald as Kerry, Fillion as Guy Gardner, Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette, Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, Sherman Augustus as John Sr., and Chris Coy as Waylon Sanders.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, showrunner Chris Mundy said, ‘[Lanterns is] not part of a larger storytelling plan right now,’ referencing Gunn’s new DC universe. He continued, ‘Season 1 is designed to be its own complete season of television that, hopefully, will become many seasons of television.’

In a statement, Gunn says the Lanterns show will be a “terrestrial-based mystery.”

Gunn said, “We call it Lanterns, and it is starring two of our favorite Green Lanterns—Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It’s going to be with HBO, as all of our series are that we’re going to talk about today. It is more of a True Detective–type mystery with our two Lanterns. A terrestrial-based mystery.”

Lanters will be the third television series in the DC Universe (DCU), based on DC Comics and featuring the Green Lantern characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It will be part of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters in the DCU.

Lanterns will consist of eight episodes and premiere on HBO in early 2026.
