Composer Alan Menken Discusses Revised Lyrics for ‘The Little Mermaid’ Live-Action Adaptation
Alan Menken, the composer for “The Little Mermaid”, explained in an interview with Vanity Fair that the lyrics of two songs from the original animated film, “Kiss the Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls”, have been revised for the upcoming live-action adaptation. Menken mentioned that there are some lyric changes in “Kiss the Girl” because people have become more sensitive to the idea of Prince Eric forcing himself on Ariel.
Menken said, “There are some lyric changes in ‘Kiss the Girl’ because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel].” Menken added, “We have some revisions in ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’ regarding lines that might make young girls somehow feel that they shouldn’t speak out of turn, even though Ursula is clearly manipulating Ariel to give up her voice.”
According to the film’s plot:
The Little Mermaid is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
“The Little Mermaid” is directed by Rob Marshall and written by David Magee. The film is co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, DeLuca Marshall, and Marc Platt Productions. The film’s star-studded cast includes Halle Bailey as Ariel, Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Daveed Diggs as Sebastian, Awkwafina as Scuttle, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, Noma Dumezweni as Carlotta, Javier Bardem as King Triton, and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.
The Little Mermaid will hit theaters on May 26, 2023, in RealD 3D, IMAX, Dolby Cinema, and 4DX formats, as well as in conventional theaters.
