The first-look set images of Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sasha Calle, and Rahul Kohli on the set of Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist have been released while filming in Upper Manhattan, New York.
In the images, you can see that Johansson is playing a detective character, while Ejiofor, Calle, and Kohli seem to be her co-workers. They are filming an investigation scene.

In an all-new story set in The Exorcist universe, a rookie detective (Johansson) trying to prove herself is plunged into an unimaginable evil that rattles everything she believes.

The film is described as a “radical new take.” It is set in the same universe as the 1973 classic and is unrelated to the recent sequels.

The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Diane Lane, Jacobi Jupe, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, Sasha Calle, John Leguizamo, Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Gil Bellows, Carl Lumbly, John Gallagher Jr., Benjamin Pajak, Carla Gugino, Robert Longstreet, Matt Biedel, Samantha Sloyan, and Kate Siegel.
The film is a reboot of The Exorcist franchise and will serve as the seventh installment in the series. It is written and directed by Flanagan.
The original The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin, tells the story of a mother who asks two Catholic priests to save her 12-year-old daughter from demonic possession. Released in 1973, the film was a huge success and earned 10 Oscar nominations while making $441 million worldwide.
In a statement during Scarlett Johansson’s casting reveal, Flanagan said, “Scarlett is a brilliant actress whose captivating performances always feel grounded and real, from genre films to summer blockbusters, and I couldn’t be happier to have her join this Exorcist film.”
Produced by David Robinson, Jason Blum, and Flanagan, with Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers. The film is a production of Blumhouse, Atomic Monster, and Morgan Creek Entertainment, in association with Flanagan’s Red Room Pictures.
The Exorcist will hit theaters on March 12, 2027, by Universal Pictures.
