DC’s Clayface has officially begun filming in Liverpool, United Kingdom.
Following the start of production, Tom Rhys Harries, who plays Matt Hagen/Clayface, was spotted on set in Liverpool, where the streets have been transformed into Gotham City.

In the images below, you can see Harries’ Matt Hagen, presumably right after his face is disfigured and before he begins the treatment that turns him into Clayface.
During the casting announcement of Tom Rhys Harries as Clayface, DC Studios head James Gunn tweeted, “After a long and incredibly exhaustive search, we finally have our DCU Clayface in Tom Rhys Harries. Both [The Batman director] Matt Reeves and I were blown away by this guy, and we can’t wait for you to see this film.”
James Watkins directs the film from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini. Based on the DC Comics villain of the same name, it will be the DCU’s third film and the sixth installment of Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
DC’s Clayface Cast:
- Tom Rhys Harries – Matt Hagen / Clayface
- Naomi Ackie – Caitlin Bates
- Eddie Marsan – Matt Hagen / Clayface’s manager
- Max Minghella – John, Caitlin Bates’ fiancé and the film’s secondary antagonist
Plot details for Clayface:
Clayface follows an aspiring actor (Harries) whose face is disfigured by a gangster. As a last resort, he turns to a fringe, Elizabeth Holmes–style scientist for help. At first, the experiment appears successful, but—well, it wouldn’t be a horror movie if the story ended there, would it?
During a recent CBS Mornings interview (via ScreenRant), Gunn said, “We’ve got Clayface, which is a totally different thing.” He added, “Although it’s in the same universe, it’s a complete horror film. That’s one of the things we want to do—there’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is going to be like Superman. The artists—the directors and the writers—each one will bring their own sense to it… That’s what we want to bring to the films because we don’t want people to get bored. We want to invigorate people.”
Produced by Gunn, Peter Safran, Matt Reeves, and Lynn Harris, with Chantal Nong serving as executive producer.
Clayface is scheduled to hit theaters on September 11, 2026.
