The first trailer for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon has been released in HD ahead of its official debut. The film is a major project from DreamWorks Pictures, and the trailer closely resembles the original How to Train Your Dragon animated film.

The trailer opens with the Viking village of Berk, showcasing a variety of dragons and providing a first look at Mason Thames as Hiccup. Gerard Butler is strikingly accurate as Stoick the Vast, the chieftain of Berk and Hiccup’s father. The trailer concludes with a heartfelt moment where Hiccup is seen forming a bond with the dragon Toothless. Watch the trailer below.

The film — written and directed by Dean DeBlois — is a live-action adaptation and remake of DreamWorks Animation’s 2010 animated film of the same name, which is loosely based on the book series by Cressida Cowell.

Here’s the plot for How to Train Your Dragon:

Hiccup is a Norse teenager from the island of Berk, where fighting dragons is a way of life. His progressive views and weird sense of humor make him a misfit, despite the fact that his father is chief of the clan. Tossed into dragon-fighting school, he endeavors to prove himself as a true Viking, but when he befriends an injured dragon he names Toothless, he has the chance to plot a new course for his people’s future.

The cast of the live-action How to Train Your Dragon includes Thames as Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III, the awkward son of Stoick the Vast; Nico Parker as Astrid Hofferson, Hiccup’s fellow student in dragon-fighting training and love interest; Butler as Stoick the Vast, the chieftain of Berk and Hiccup’s father, reprising his role from the animated films; Nick Frost as Gobber the Belch, Berk’s blacksmith and Stoick’s close friend; Julian Dennison as Fishlegs Ingerman, Hiccup’s best friend; Gabriel Howell as Snotlout Jorgenson, Hiccup’s cousin; Bronwyn James as Ruffnut Thorston, Tuffnut’s twin sister; Harry Trevaldwyn as Tuffnut Thorston, Ruffnut’s twin brother; and Ruth Codd as Phlegma, a member of the Viking village.

The film is produced by DeBlois, Marc Platt, and Adam Siegel, with Marc Platt Productions serving as the production company.

How To Train Your Dragon is scheduled to hit theaters on June 13, 2025, by Universal Pictures.
