A24 has released the first trailer for David Lowery’s Mother Mary, starring Anne Hathaway as a volatile pop singer who becomes embroiled in a twisted psychosexual affair with an old friend and fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel. Watch the trailer below.
Here are the plot details for Mother Mary:
Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer, Sam Anselm (Coel), on the eve of her comeback performance.

The film is written and directed by David Lowery and stars Hathaway, Coel, Hunter Schafer, Atheena Frizzell, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Isaura Barbé-Brown, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford, and FKA Twigs. It features original songs written and produced by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX, with additional music by FKA Twigs.
Speaking on The Last Video Store podcast, Lowery was asked about Mother Mary. According to the filmmaker, it’s a “weird, weird movie,” and he’s not entirely sure how it’s all going to turn out.
Lowery said, “I know what I set out to make, and that is indeed what I’ve made, but it is so wild. It is a movie that will provoke, I am sure, a lot of strong feelings, in every possible direction. Inasmuch as it’s one of the few movies I’ve made not based on something else, it feels very true to who I am, and very close to me, but it is also consistently surprising me in ways that I did not anticipate… What I’ve got on my computer now is probably pretty much what it’s going to be; it will just get cleaned up. It’s a weird, weird movie.”
Produced by Toby Halbrooks, Jeanie Igoe, James M. Johnston, Jonas Katzenstein, Maximilian Leo, Jonathan Saubach, and David Lowery.
A24 will release Mother Mary in the United States in April 2026.
