Takashi Yamazaki, director of Godzilla Minus One and Godzilla Minus Zero, is preparing his first major studio film, Grandgear.
According to Deadline, Paul Giamatti, Nico Parker, and Sam Nivola are set to star in the upcoming sci-fi action movie. The film will feature Pacific Rim-style battles between mechas, while plot details are being kept under wraps.

Attendees at this year’s CinemaCon got their first look at footage from Grandgear. The preview featured a giant robot battling a kaiju, a massive monster similar to those seen in the Godzilla movies. The footage also had a ground-level perspective reminiscent of Cloverfield.
Yamazaki will direct the film from an original screenplay he wrote himself. J.J. Abrams, through Bad Robot, will produce the movie alongside Glen Zipper. The project marks Yamazaki’s next major film following his work on the Godzilla franchise.
Nivola earned praise for The White Lotus and received an Actor Award nomination. He will next star in Hulu’s Phony alongside Connie Britton. His film credits include White Noise and Maestro.
Parker won the Breakthrough Performance Award at Sundance for Suncoast and received a BAFTA nomination for The Last of Us. She also stars in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon.
Giamatti will next appear in A24’s The Debut, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival and is gaining awards-season attention.
Grandgear will hit theaters in the United States on January 14, 2028.
