Greta Gerwig‘s ‘Barbie‘ movie has earned $1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film directed by a woman. Only two movies, ‘Barbie’ and ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ have reached the $1 billion mark this year.
‘Barbie’ premiered in theaters on July 21, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures. It debuted alongside Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer,’ which also hit the $500 million mark worldwide.
During an interview with Collider, Margot Robbie said that in her pitch during the green-light meeting, she highlighted how studios thrive by combining bold concepts with visionary directors like Greta Gerwig. She told Mattel that the movie could make a billion dollars, though she acknowledges she might have been overselling it. Robbie said, “I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was that the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie added, “And then I gave a series of examples like ‘dinosaurs and Steven Spielberg’—pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got Barbie and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, okay?”
