The first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has been released. The colorful teaser isn’t long, but it’s amazing to watch Robbie as Barbie. Watch the trailer below.
The live-action film is based on Mattel’s eponymous fashion doll brand. Greta Gerwig directed from a screenplay by Noah Baumbach. Margot Robbie plays Barbie, Ryan Gosling plays Ken, America Ferrera, Simu Liu, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, Alexandra Shipp, and Emma Mackey. It is the first live-action film version of the franchise, following a number of computer-animated direct-to-video and streaming television features.
Barbie has been in production for eight years and has undergone several modifications, with Amy Schumer and Anne Hathaway circling the character in earlier versions of the screenplay. When it came to directing, Alethea Jones and Patty Jenkins were also in the mix. According to The Zoe Report, Barbie will be an epic film.
In an interview with THR, Robbie told the Warner Bros. film is hoping to subvert expectations. She said, “We like the things that feel a little left of center.” Robbie added, “Something like Barbie where the IP, the name itself, people immediately have an idea of, ‘Oh, Margot is playing Barbie, I know what that is,’ but our goal is to be like, ‘Whatever you’re thinking, we’re going to give you something totally different — the thing you didn’t know you wanted’…can we truly honor the IP and the fan base and also surprise people? Because if we can do all that and provoke a thoughtful conversation, then we’re really firing on all cylinders.”
Barbie will hit theaters on July 21, 2023, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
