HBO is developing a new ‘Game of Thrones‘ spin-off series titled ‘Aegon’s Conquest‘ from writer Mattson Tomlin (‘The Batman‘), which follows the Targaryen’s bloody and brutal conquest of Westeros.
What is ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ Series About?
The upcoming series, ‘Aegon’s Conquest,’ takes a “back to basics” approach to George R.R. Martin’s fantasy world. While the specifics of this approach are unclear given the original series’ complexity, ‘Aegon’s Conquest’ serves as a direct prequel to ‘House of the Dragon.’ It portrays the Targaryens’ brutal conquest of Westeros, led by Aegon Targaryen, alongside his sister-wives Rhaenys and Visenya, using dragons to unify six of the Seven Kingdoms within just two years. Only Dorne manages to resist their rule.
Tomlin is a prolific writer who contributed to ‘The Batman’ and is co-writing its sequel. He also penned ‘BRZRKR‘ for Keanu Reeves and is showrunning an animated Terminator series for Netflix.
Recently, Martin has confirmed that three animated ‘Game of Thrones’ series are currently in development. One of these, titled ‘Nine Voyages,’ will delve into the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake.
HBO released the first trailer for ‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2 during the CCXP fan convention in Brazil. ‘House of the Dragon’ is serving as a prequel to ‘Game of Thrones.’ Set about 100 years after the Targaryen Conquest, it follows the events leading to the “Dance of the Dragons” war. The first season premiered in August 2022, and the series has been renewed for a second season by HBO, with Ryan Condal as the showrunner. The series was created by George R. R. Martin and Condal for HBO. According to reports, HBO is reportedly considering a Season 3 for ‘House of the Dragon’ after wrapping up Season 2.
‘House of the Dragon’ season 2 will consist of eight episodes and is scheduled to premiere on Max in August 2024.
