Netflix released the first trailer for ‘His Three Daughters,’ a riveting, funny, and touching portrait of family dynamics starring Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen as estranged sisters who reunite to care for their ailing father.
What is the Plot of His Three Daughters?
Here’s the synopsis for ‘His Three Daughters’:
From writer-director Azazel Jacobs (French Exit, The Lovers) comes this bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days. Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sports-betting stoner who has never left her father’s apartment — much to the chagrin of her half-sisters, who share a different mother and worldview. Continuing his astute exploration of family dynamics in close-knit spaces, Jacobs follows the siblings over the course of three volatile days, as death looms, grievances erupt, and love seeps through the cracks of a fractured home.
The film also stars Jovan Adepo, Jay O. Sanders, Rudy Galvan, Jose Febus, Randy Ramos Jr., and Jasmine Bracey.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Olsen said, “When we talked about the script for the first time, I said [to Jacobs], ‘It’s really funny that this is the version of myself that you envision.’ I think of myself as kind of direct and demanding, but I do have a nurturing softness to me, and I do act as a mediator often. He knows that part of me as well. I feel like I tapped into a softness that I don’t think I’ve been able to put onscreen before. I was enjoying going back to other films as references. I was thinking about Dianne Wiest in Hannah and Her Sisters, even though she’s a totally different character, but she exudes such softness in everything she does. I was trying to allow that part of myself that Aza, I guess, sees [laughs], but is something I haven’t put on camera.”
The film premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival and received high praise, with a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a 3.6 rating on Letterboxd, and an 8.9 rating on IMDb, marking it as one of Olsen’s most acclaimed projects. Following this, Netflix acquired the distribution rights for under $7 million.
Produced by Alex Orlovsky, Duncan Montgomery, Lia Buman, Marc Marrie, Mal Ward, Matt Aselton, Tim Headington, Jack Selby, and Diaz Jacobs, it is a collaboration between High-Frequency Entertainment, Arts & Sciences, Tango, Animal Pictures, Talkies Inc., and Case Study Films. Kendall Anderson’s creative touch shines as the production designer, while Gene Park handles sound and Cinetic Media manages publicity. The original score comes from Rodrigo Amarante, and the US Sales Agent is Creative Artists Agency (CAA).
‘His Three Daughters’ will be released in select theaters in the United States on September 6, 2024, before its streaming debut on Netflix on September 20, 2024.
