Will Sony’s Kraven the Hunter lead to Kraven’s Last Hunt? Director J.C. Chandor hints at the possibility of concluding Kraven’s story with this iconic tale if Kraven the Hunter performs well during its theatrical run.
In a recent interview with Collider, Chandor says that if the film is successful, he would like to conclude Kraven’s story with an adaptation of Kraven’s Last Hunt.
The film shows Kraven’s journey before he reaches the mindset for Kraven’s Last Hunt. The ending aims to make audiences believe Kraven could exist in a world where Kraven’s Last Hunt is possible.
Chandor said, “You’re rooting for him. The rule I set for myself is by the final frame of our movie, you had to believe that character could live in a world where Kraven’s Last Hunt is a real thing. But in this part of the journey, he’s not there yet.”
Chandor added, “It’s what I hope makes the story somewhat human. You’re getting to see the meetings in the road where one direction leads to Kraven’s Last Hunt, and one leads to success and more moderated happiness. What I’ve tried to do in all my films is make those moments of decision the keys in the movie. It’s normally not one. You can make a bad decision and completely reorient and correct yourself. Aaron and I used to joke about this while we were making the movie: 70% of murders go unsolved, which means there are murderers everywhere.”
Chandor and Aaron Taylor-Johnson want Kraven’s Last Hunt to be the final part of the story if Kraven the Hunter is successful. The journey to Kraven’s Last Hunt is exciting and fun but ends in a sad and tragic way. The character is being developed to fit the story of Kraven’s Last Hunt. Chandor says this film made him nervous, similar to when he worked on All is Lost. He wants Kraven’s Last Hunt to match the quality of his other movies. The movie becomes more like a Marvel story by the third act but keeps the action realistic.
Here’s the plot details for Kraven the Hunter:
In Kraven the Hunter, Kraven (Taylor-Johnson) is recruited by Calypso (Ariana DeBose) to stop a corrupt magnate named Gregory Herd (Alessandro Nivola) from doing something bad called the Gathering of the Five. Herd hires two people, the Foreigner and the Chameleon (Fred Hechinger), to stop Kraven. Later, Kraven finds out that the Chameleon is his brother, and their father, Nikolai Kravinoff (Russell Crowe), is the real villain and Herd’s boss. Calypso also works for Nikolai and tricks Kraven so that Nikolai can sacrifice him. But then Calypso falls in love with Kraven and helps him fight Nikolai.
Produced by Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach, and David Householter, with production companies including Columbia Pictures, Marvel Entertainment, TSG Entertainment, and Arad Productions.
