The Punisher Is Returning In Daredevil: Born Again

Jon Bernthal‘s The Punisher is set to make his return in Marvel’s ‘Daredevil: Born Again‘ series. Bernthal will star alongside Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio in the series, which will begin filming in New York this month.

Bernthal’s The Punisher last appeared in the second season of the Netflix series, which was released in January 2019. Despite the show’s popularity and critical acclaim, it was canceled by Netflix in February 2019, along with the rest of the Marvel Netflix series, due to the expiration of their licensing agreement with Marvel. The Punisher is now available on Disney+.

Daredevil: Born Again is created by Matt Corman and Chris Ord for Disney+. The series is a direct sequel to Echo and a standalone sequel to Daredevil. It is the twenty-sixth MCU television series and the ninth installment of Phase Five.

Who Is The The Punisher In Marvel Comis?

In Marvel comics, The Punisher is a vigilante who uses lethal methods to fight crime and seeks revenge against those who killed his family. His real name is Frank Castle, and he was a former Marine who became a skilled marksman and hand-to-hand combatant. After his family was killed by the mob, Castle became the Punisher and dedicated his life to fighting crime by any means necessary. He is often portrayed as a morally ambiguous character, as his extreme methods put him at odds with the traditional superhero code of ethics.

Back in 2023, Bernthal told THR about the possibility of The Punisher joining the MCU. He said, “I think if there’s any letup on that character, you do a disservice to the character, to every iteration of the character, to every comic book that’s come before, and to all of the unbelievable fans of the character,” said the actor. “This character means so much to people in the military. So like I said before, it’s not about whether you do the character; it’s about whether you can do it right, and I’m only interested in doing it right.”

In Marvel Comics, Daredevil: Born Again follows Daredevil’s archenemy, Wilson Fisk (aka Kingpin), discovering the secret identity of Daredevil (aka Matt Murdock) and using that knowledge to destroy his life. Fisk uses his vast wealth and resources to ruin Murdock’s reputation, destroy his law practice, and leave him homeless and destitute. As Murdock tries to rebuild his life, he is helped by a number of unlikely allies, including former lover Karen Page, who has fallen into drug addiction and prostitution, and Captain America, who provides Murdock with a new costume and shield. Murdock eventually confronts Fisk and is able to defeat him with the help of a small group of allies.

Daredevil: Born Again also stars Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Sandrine Holt, and Nikki M. James. Produced by Marvel Studios. Executive producers are Kevin Feige, Chris Gary, Matt Corman, and Chris Ord.

Daredevil: Born Again Season one will consist of eighteen episodes and will premiere on Disney+ in spring 2024.
