Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, said that “Silk: Spider Society,” the first of multiple live-action shows based on Marvel characters controlled by Sony, is a huge focus for the studio: “It’s a huge focus certainly for all of us here, and for me in particular.”
Sony’s Spider-Man Universe continues to grow with new TV shows. The upcoming animated Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse film will be released on June 2, 2023. Other characters introduced in the SPUMC include Venom, Morbius, Kraven the Hunter, and Madame Web. Silk: Spider Society will be released on MGM+ and Amazon Prime Video. Angela Kang will direct the show. The series will be executive produced by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. More ‘Spider-Man’ TV spin-offs will be developed soon.
Speaking to Deadline, Katherine Pope, president of Sony Pictures Television Studios, said, “It’s a huge focus certainly for all of us here, and for me in particular. I was already a fan of Angela Kang, so I’m really, really excited to be working with her on Silk. She’s just brilliant and a total pro.” Pope added, “This is also an example of working really closely with Tom Rothman and Sanford Panitch, and the motion picture group, to make sure that we are in lockstep with them and also executing at the same level. They’ve done such an incredible job with that franchise, so we want to make sure we’re executing at that level.”
Silk is created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos. Cindy Moon, a Korean-American woman bitten by the same spider that bit Peter Parker, as she escapes imprisonment and searches for her missing family on her way to becoming the superhero known as Silk.
In a statement, Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon Studios said “Amy Pascal, Phil Lord, Chris Miller, and Sony’s recent live-action and animated reimagining of the Spider-Man franchise has represented some of the most dynamic superhero storytelling in film.” Salke added, “Together with Angela Kang’s creative vision, we couldn’t be more pleased to bring Silk: Spider Society to our MGM+ and Prime Video customers.”
