Legendary DC Comics Artist Ramona Fradon Passes Away at 97

Legendary DC Comics artist Ramona Fradon, best known for her work on “Aquaman” and as the co-creator of ‘Metamorpho‘, passed away today at the age of 97. Her retirement came just in January 2024. Fradon’s death was announced by Catskill Comics, a comic book art dealer, on Facebook.

How did Ramona Fradon’s career in comic books begin?

Fradon began her career in the 1950s, starting out at DC Comics. Despite challenges, she gained recognition for her talent and worked in various comic genres. Her breakthrough came when she started illustrating “Aquaman,” showcasing her dynamic artwork. Fradon also co-created ‘Metamorpho’ in 1965, a character that became popular among readers. Throughout her career, she remained versatile and dedicated to her craft, leaving a lasting impact on the comic book industry.

In a Facebook post, Catskill Comics wrote, “It comes with great sadness to announce that Ramona Fradon passed away just a few moments ago. Ramona was 97, had a long career in the comic book industry, and was still drawing just a few days ago.”

“She was a remarkable person in so many ways. I will miss all the great conversations and laughs we had. I am blessed that I was able to work with her on a professional level and also be able to call her my friend. If anyone wishes to send a card to the family, please feel free to send them to Catskill Comics, and I’ll be happy to pass them along.”

Fradon announced her retirement on January 9 via Catskill Comics, as shared on the art dealer’s site. “After an extremely long run in the comic industry, at 97, Ramona has decided it’s time for her to retire. She will no longer be doing commissions. She apologizes to all the fans who have been waiting patiently on her wait list to get one. She did say though from time to time she’ll do a drawing or two to put up for sale on the website.”

Who Is Ramona Fradon?

Ramona Fradon was a highly respected comic book artist, renowned for her work with DC Comics. Born on October 2, 1926, she gained recognition in the 1950s for her talent and contributions. Fradon is best known for her illustrations for “Aquaman” and her co-creation of the character ‘Metamorpho’.
