Following the ongoing controversy on Social Media regarding Shira Haas’ casting as Sabra in ‘Captain America: New World Order’. Marvel Studios recently give a statement to The New York Times, “While our characters and stories are inspired by the comics. They are always freshly imagined for the screen and today’s audience, and the filmmakers are taking a new approach with the character Sabra who was first introduced in the comics over 40 years ago.”

Sabra is one of the Jerusalem, Israel, she was raised on a special kibbutz run by the Israeli government along with her family after her mutant power manifested. Sabra is also a policewoman in the Israeli Police forces of Tel Aviv, as a cover. It was presumably at this time she saved a near-to-death junkie found in an alley, granting her powers at the same time she saved her by transferring her life energy.

In Marvel Comics, Sabra made her entry with the Incredible Hulk in a battle, Sabra was mistakenly believed to be working with Arab terrorists operating in Israel. As Hulk left with the body of a young Arab killed by the terrorists, Sabra chased him. At the end of their encounter, she was devastated by Hulk’s speech about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the death of Sahad.

Shira Haas is a born Israeli actress who got famous through playing the role of Esther Shapiro in the Netflix miniseries Unorthodox. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award and a Primetime Emmy Award. She won the Tribeca Film Festival Award for Best International Actress for her performance in the Israeli drama film Asia (2020).

Captain America: New World Order is directed by Julius Onah from a script written by Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson. The film stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Captain America, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Danny Ramirez as Joaquín Torres/Falcon, and Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns/Leader.

Captain America: New World Order will hit theaters on May 3, 2024.
