Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be released in theaters in two months, and director Matt Shakman has opened up on how H.E.R.B.I.E., an important character in the movie, was built. Veteran voice actor Matthew Wood, who voiced General Grievous in Star Wars, provides the voice for H.E.R.B.I.E.
Speaking to Empire, Shakman revealed that H.E.R.B.I.E. was created using a blend of remote-control practical FX, puppetry, and CGI to make him feel tangible and lifelike on screen. H.E.R.B.I.E. was portrayed on set with several physical props — including a wooden puppet and a sophisticated animatronic version controlled by four technicians. The main animatronic version featured full head and arm movement and was able to drive, clean, pick up toys, and serve martinis during scenes.

Shakman describes H.E.R.B.I.E. as “just as alive and important” as the main characters, serving as a lovable and indispensable part of the team. He is Reed Richards’ right hand in the lab, helping with experiments both on Earth and in space, and is even seen building a crib — possibly for Reed and Sue’s baby.
Shakman said, “He’s absolutely as important and as alive as any other member of the cast.” He added, “He’s sometimes a slightly put-upon robot, but he is definitely a member of the family. He’s just so charming and adorable.” H.E.R.B.I.E. is an invaluable asset in the Baxter Building and beyond. He is really Reed’s right hand in the lab, capable of assisting him with any sort of experiment, always by his side — whether in New York City or out in space. Or, as seen above, when building a crib — presumably for Reed and Sue’s impending arrival.

Recently, Deadline reported that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will not be an origin story. The film will begin four years after the team becomes heroes. Here’s the official logline: “Opening in theaters July 25, Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps introduces Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm / Invisible Woman (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm / Human Torch (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm / The Thing (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) as they face their most daunting challenge yet.”
“Forced to balance their roles as heroes with the strength of their family bond, they must defend Earth from a ravenous space god called Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his enigmatic Herald, Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). And if Galactus’ plan to devour the entire planet — and everyone on it — weren’t bad enough, it suddenly gets very personal.”
The film also stars Paul Walter Hauser, John Malkovich, Natasha Lyonne, and Sarah Niles. Directed by Shakman, produced by Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Louis D’Esposito, Grant Curtis, and Tim Lewis.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps hits theaters and IMAX on July 25, 2025.
