‘Mortal Kombat 2’ Will Feature a Lot of “Wild, Crazy Nonsense” and “Longer Fights,” Teases Lewis Tan

Lewis Tan says the upcoming ‘Mortal Kombat‘ sequel will be 100 times better than the first film. He also confirmed that it will feature a lot of “wild, crazy nonsense” and “longer fights.”

During the 2024 San Diego Comic-Con, Tan told Collider about ‘Mortal Kombat 2‘ having more gore, longer fight sequences, and a “ramped-up” tone.

Tan said, “I would say the tone is slightly different. It’s a little more ramped up. Like I said, it’s hard to tackle and navigate that storyline because they did it with a new character that’s not in the game, right? It’s like, whose story do we tell? How do we tell it? How do we introduce this to the audience of people that maybe don’t know Mortal Kombat as well as some of the fans? We tackled that problem in the first movie, and now it’s just off to the races. We can just go for it. So, the second movie has wild, crazy nonsense and is incredible.”

“what people are writing, what people are talking about, what people liked and what they didn’t like about the first movie.” Mortal Kombat 2, he said, will also have “a tournament” that fans can look forward to, but he declined to share more details about it. “We’ve made it 100 times better in the second movie based on what we learned from the first,”

Directed by Simon McQuoid from a screenplay by Jeremy Slater, ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ is based on the video game franchise created by John Tobias and Ed Boon. Serving as the sequel to 2021’s ‘Mortal Kombat,’ the film is also the fourth installment in the Mortal Kombat film series.

The filming recently wrapped, and Tan posted a wrap party picture on his social media account. The plot details have not yet been revealed.

In the film, Tan will reprise his role as Cole Young, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson ‘Jax’ Briggs, Tadanobu Asano as Raiden, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Joe Taslim as Bi-Han/Noob Saibot, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, Josh Lawson as Kano, Max Huang as Kung Lao, Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Ford as Shao Kahn, Desmond Chiam as King Jerrod, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, and CJ. Bloomfield as Baraka.

Produced by James Wan, Michael Clear, Todd Garner, Simon McQuoid, and E. Bennett Walsh, ‘Mortal Kombat 2’ is a production of New Line Cinema, Atomic Monster, and Broken Road Productions.

‘Mortal Kombat 2’ will hit theaters on October 24, 2025, by Warner Bros. Pictures.
