A new report detailing Robert Downey Jr.‘s Doctor Doom in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday has leaked online.
According to an insider report, Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom spends 90% of the movie with his face obscured by his mask, similar to Robert Pattinson in The Batman, or kept out of view, with the “face reveal” post-scarring happening in Act 3.
Doom has at least three costumes throughout the film. One features a “softer”-looking mask, as seen in the mid-credits scene of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and another is the comic-accurate, harsher-looking version seen at the Disney event in Shanghai. The third has not yet been revealed.
The four “main” characters of Avengers: Doomsday are Doctor Doom, Reed Richards, Steve Rogers, and Thor.
“Victor Von Doom apparently has the greatest presence in the story, while Steve Rogers is reportedly all over the movie and interacts with Loki at least once.”
Doctor Doom is allied with the Avengers until Act 3 of Avengers: Doomsday, when he removes his mask and turns sinister.
The arc of the Avengers films is essentially Doctor Doom’s supervillain origin, blending elements of his tragic comic backstory with the larger multiverse storyline. Accordingly, he receives a significant amount of screen time, likely more than Thanos did in Avengers: Infinity War.
Doom’s scarred face is the result of an incident that killed his wife and child. Much like Darth Vader — a character Doctor Doom clearly influenced from a visual standpoint — the armor he wears is the very thing keeping him alive.
“There’s a reveal sequence involving several of Doom’s masked followers, where they unmask and are shown to be familiar characters, some of whom will be added to the film during the final round of additional photography taking place in the first half of this year.”
Directed by the Russo brothers from a screenplay by their longtime collaborator Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron.
