DC’s Lanterns series takes place across two timelines. The story begins in 2016 after a shooting in Rushville and later jumps ahead to 2026, where the plot becomes much bigger. The series is also being planned as a multi-season show.
On Patreon, a scooper shared major plot details for Lanterns.
The story begins in 2016, with Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler) revealing that he is the only human Green Lantern, while Guy Gardner has not yet become a Lantern. Hal believes the Rushville shooting is connected to aliens, but the town sheriff does not agree. Hal has also been secretly watching the town for a long time.

Hal Jordan’s training under Sinestro is said to be very important to the series.
John Stewart’s role in the Green Lantern Corps is unusual because his recruitment marks the first time the Guardians of the Universe directly stepped in to choose someone. Hal is hesitant to train John as his replacement, which creates conflict between them.
Showrunner Chris Mundy has already confirmed that the series will feature many more creative and powerful Green Lantern constructs than fans have seen before.
“We could have put out a trailer that was tremendously green,” Mundy said, referencing complaints that the clip made Lanterns look more dusty and monochrome than superhero shows tend to be. “So the fact that people are talking about it just means, to me, that they’re excited about the show. We have a lot of respect for the source material; otherwise, we wouldn’t be doing this show. I think when people see it, it won’t be a controversy.”
Here are the plot details for Lanterns:
Two human members of the Green Lantern Corps, veteran Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart, serve as intergalactic law enforcers and battle powerful threats on Earth using their power rings. As they investigate a murder in Nebraska, they are drawn into far darker mysteries and reckonings.
With eight confirmed episodes, the series is led by Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen), Chris Mundy (Ozark), and DC Comics writer Tom King, who developed the story together. Additional writers on the project include Justin H. Britt-Gibson (Counterpart), Breannah Gibson (The Penguin), and Vanessa Baden Kelly (The Sex Lives of College Girls).
The cast of Lanterns includes Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, Kelly Macdonald as Sheriff Kerry Kane, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner.
The recurring cast includes Garret Dillahunt as William Macon, Poorna Jagannathan as Zoe, Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, Nicole Ari Parker as Bernadette Stewart, Jason Ritter as Billy Macon, Sherman Augustus as John Stewart Sr., Paul Ben-Victor as Antaan, and Chris Coy as Waylon Sanders.
Lanterns is scheduled to premiere on HBO on August 16, 2026.
