Nia DaCosta debunked Variety’s claim that she left ‘The Marvels‘ during post-production. She explained that she stayed with the project until she had to start her next film, as required by her contract. She also revealed that the transition was smooth, with a clear vision for ‘The Marvels’ in place, contrary to what some people may believe.
Recently, Variety reported that while ‘The Marvels’ was in post-production, DaCosta began working on another film called ‘Hedda‘ and moved to London for it. A source familiar with the production found it unusual for a director to leave a $250 million movie with just a few months to go.
Nia DaCosta Clarifies ‘The Marvels’ Post-Production Situation and Remote Work
In an interview with Jake Hamilton’s YouTube channel, DaCosta said she didn’t leave ‘The Marvels’ during post-production. She continued working on it remotely from the UK for her next project due to contractual obligations, as the film’s release date had changed four times.
DaCosta said, “For me personally, it was that they moved the date of the film four different times. They knew the entire time that I had an obligation—a green-lit movie with people who were waiting for me. And I pushed that, and then I pushed it again, and then I pushed it again. Eventually, we all knew that if [The Marvels] pushes again, I’m not going to be in LA to do the rest of this in person. By the time I left to start preparing for my next film, everyone was so clear about what the film was and what we wanted. It really wasn’t this dramatic sort of thing people are thinking it is.”
‘The Marvels’ is directed by Nia DaCosta, the film also holds the record of being the most expensive movie ever directed by a black woman, surpassing Ava DuVernay’s ‘A Wrinkle In Time’. The film stars Brie Larson as Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Iman Vellani as Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, Park Seo-joon, Zawe Ashton, Saagar Shaikh, Zenobia Shroff, and Mohan Kapur. The film also brings back Goose, the Flerken.
