Paramount Pictures is quietly developing a third Sonic Universe movie.

As per reports, Paramount is confirmed to attend CinemaCon 2026. The studio will showcase its future plans on April 16, the final day of CinemaCon, with a panel lasting 1 hour and 45 minutes. At the Sonic Central presentation (via ComicBook.com), Sonic the Hedgehog 3 producer Toby Ascher teased more films for the franchise, saying, “There’s such a rich universe of stories. I don’t see us slowing down at all.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is now scheduled to begin production on March 2, 2026, and is expected to wrap in May. The film is reportedly expected to have a higher budget than the previous installments and will explore a “darker future.”

Jeff Fowler, who directed the three Sonic the Hedgehog films, will return to direct the fourth movie from a screenplay by Pat Casey, John Whittington, and Josh Miller. Filming is set to begin soon in Vancouver, Canada. The ensemble cast features James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, Idris Elba, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Keanu Reeves as Shadow the Hedgehog, a character beloved by fans of the video games.

According to the Jim Carrey Online website, Paramount is actively trying to get Jim Carrey back for Sonic 4, and his return is possible. In an interview after the release of Sonic 3, he said he’s ‘definitely open’ to returning as Robotnik, explaining that it always comes down to the idea: ‘Generally, they come to me with the next concept. If I go, “That sounds fun,” then I’ll do it.’ It’s a statement that fits Jim’s career perfectly — one built not on obligation, but on passion and playfulness.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will hit theaters on March 19, 2027, by Paramount Pictures.
