We are not getting the ‘Sherlock Holmes 3‘ with Robert Downey Jr. soon. For now, it would be a young Sherlock Holmes movie from Amazon Prime Video.
Prime Video is developing a young Sherlock Holmes series starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a teenage Sherlock Holmes in the 1860s and 70s. The series, adapted from Andrew Lane‘s “Young Sherlock Holmes” novels, will follow him as he faces various mysteries, crimes, and adventures.
Guy Ritchie, who directed “Sherlock Holmes” (2009) and “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows” (2011) starring Downey Jr. as Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as Dr. John Watson, is returning to direct the Prime Video eight-episode series.
In a statement, Ritchie said, “In ‘Young Sherlock,’ we’re going to see an exhilarating new version of the detective everyone thinks they know in a way they’ve never imagined before.” Ritchie added, “We’re going to crack open this enigmatic character, find out what makes him tick, and learn how he becomes the genius we all love.”
The show is written by Matthew Parkhill, who also serves as the showrunner and executive producer, alongside Guy Ritchie and Andrew Lane. Simon Kelton of Inspirational Entertainment also executive produces, as do Ivan Atkinson, Simon Maxwell of Motive Pictures, Dhana Gilbert, Colin Wilson, and former Amazon head of series development Marc Resteghini. Harriet Creelman will co-executive produce for Motive Pictures, which is handling physical production.
Vernon Sanders, head of television for Amazon MGM Studios, said, “This exciting, new chapter about one of the world’s best-known literary characters, will delight our global customers with its captivating storytelling.” Sanders added, “With the brilliant creative team, led by Guy Ritchie and Matthew Parkhill, we will explore the untold mysteries of how young Sherlock found his way to a life of truth-seeking.”
The project was originally packaged by Kelton with Atkinson before partnering with Motive, Gilbert, and Resteghini, and bringing it to Amazon MGM Studios, where both Gilbert and Resteghini have overall deals.
Lane’s “Young Sherlock Holmes” book series reached its eighth installment, released in September 2015. According to Amazon, the upcoming show is described as “the action-packed origin story of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s beloved detective in an explosive re-imagining of this iconic character. At age 19, Sherlock Holmes is disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University, which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.”
Fiennes Tiffin recently starred in Ritchie’s movie ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.’ He is also recognized for his roles in films such as ‘Woman King,’ ‘The Loneliest Boy in the World,’ ‘First Love,’ the ‘After’ franchise, and ‘The Silencing.’ Additionally, he is known for portraying a young Tom Riddle in ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.’
The show will commence filming this fall, with the release date yet to be announced.
