The cast of Quentin Tarantino‘s film movie, ‘The Movie Critic,’ may feature Paul Walter Hauser, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Travolta. No one has been officially cast yet. There were rumors that Hauser was offered the lead role before the strike, and Tarantino is considering Travolta. Sam Jackson hinted at being in the film, but it’s not confirmed.
The script was penned by Tarantino himself, and filming will begin in 2024. The film’s story is described as being set in late 1970s Los Angeles. It is already reported that ‘The Movie Critic’ will be his final film before retiring from Hollywood.
‘The Movie Critic’ is based on a journalist who wrote for a magazine that Tarantino read while working as a vending machine restocker during his youth. The film is set in 1977 Southern California and follows a character arc similar to Robert De Niro’s Travis Bickle in Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver.”
Tarantino remembered, “There was this interesting movie page in a porno magazine I read as a teenager. He wrote about mainstream movies, and he was a very good, cynical critic, kind of like a mix between early Howard Stern and what Travis Bickle would be if he were a film critic. Think of Travis’ diary entries.”
He said that the porno magazine critic was funny but rude, using racial slurs and cursing. He died in his late 30s, likely due to complications from alcoholism. In ‘The Movie Critic,’ the magazine will be fictionalized as “The Popstar Pages,” and the film is based on a not-so-famous guy who wrote movie reviews for a porno magazine in his early to mid-30s.
‘The Movie Critic’ release date is TBA.
