In 2007, Downey earned the role of Tony Stark in the blockbuster film Iron Man, due mainly to the support of the director, Jon Favreau. The film had low expectations at the time, and many critics didn’t think the film would be a success.

Downey Jr. was paid only $500,000 for the role. However, the film made over $580 million at the box office, and the success of the film is what lead to the creation of the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU).

As the MCU grew in popularity, so did Downey’s net worth. As being the face of the MCU franchise, Downey was able to negotiate some seriously high paydays for his appearances in the films. His final film in the MCU was the movie Avengers: Endgame. For the film, Downey received a whopping $75 million dollars from his base salary and percentage of profits.
