Following the success of vampire thriller Sinners, director Ryan Coogler has confirmed that an X-Files reboot series for Disney will be his next project.
In a recent interview with Last Podcast on the Left, Coogler confirmed that a reboot of The X-Files is “immediately next” on his slate. Also, Coogler hinted it could be a darker, scarier direction for the show: “Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f**king scary.”
Coogler said, “I’ve been excited about that for a long time and I’m fired up to get back to it, and that, you know, some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f**king scary.”
Coogler already conquered the superhero genre with the MCU’s Black Panther movies and the supernatural movie Sinners. Now, the new X-Files reboot will be his next big step, continuing the legacy of the famous sci-fi and horror series created by Chris Carter.
The X-Files is a TV show that debuted in 1993, created by Chris Carter. It follows two FBI agents — Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) — as they investigate strange and unexplained cases known as “X-Files.” Mulder believes in aliens and the paranormal, while Scully is more skeptical and relies on science. The series became a major hit for blending supernatural stories with real-world conspiracy theories.
Back in 2023, it was reported that Coogler was working on an X-Files reboot as part of his deal with Walt Disney Television. When asked if he had spoken with Gillian Anderson, Coogler said they have talked. “She’s amazing, and fingers crossed,” he said, adding that she was working on Tron: Ares the last time they spoke. “We’re going to try to make something really great, something for the true X-Files fans — and maybe bring in some new ones too.”
Coogler’s Sinners is now playing in theaters.
