Ridley Scott‘s ‘Gladiator 2‘ is currently filming in Morocco. According to reports, an unexpected accident occurred during the filming of a stunt sequence, and several crew members were injured on June 7, 2023. Deadline confirms “six crew members with non-life-threatening burn injuries.“
The Sun initially described the incident on the set of ‘Gladiator 2’ as an explosion. However, it has been clarified that the incident was actually a planned stunt. Onlookers speculated that a gas pipe on the set may have ruptured. The Sun also noted that the production is taking place in Ouarzazate, where temperatures can routinely reach 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Paramount Pictures, the studio behind the film, said, “While filming a planned stunt sequence on the set of the ‘Gladiator’ sequel, an accident occurred during which several crew members experienced non-life-threatening injuries.” the spokesperson added, “The safety and full medical services teams on-site were able to act quickly so that those who were impacted immediately received the necessary care. They are all in stable condition and continue to receive treatment.“
The film is led by Paul Mescal, who is playing the role of Lucius, and the other cast members include May Calamawy, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, Connie Nielsen, and Denzel Washington.
Ridley Scott is directing from a screenplay by David Scarpa. Scott will also produce alongside Scott Free President Michael Pruss, Doug Wick, and Lucy Fisher through Red Wagon Entertainment. Universal and DreamWorks co-produced the first film, and while DreamWorks will not be involved in the sequel, Universal has the right to collaborate again when the project is packaged.
Gladiator 2 will hit theaters on November 22, 2024, by Paramount Pictures.
