The last film in the Shrek series is “Shrek Forever After,” which was released in 2010. After 14 years, we finally have an update on the official release date for the fifth installment from DreamWorks Animation. The studio has announced the release date for “Shrek 5” along with the return of three main cast members: Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz. See the poster below.
When is the Release Date of “Shrek 5”?
According to DreamWorks Animation, “Shrek 5” is scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2026, by Universal Pictures.
In the film, Myers will return as Shrek, Murphy as Donkey, and Diaz as Princess Fiona. There is no confirmation yet if Antonio Banderas will return as Puss in Boots. The film will be directed by Walt Dohrn, who served as a writer and artist on “Shrek 2” and “Shrek the Third,” and as head of story on “Shrek Forever After,” in which he also voiced Rumpelstiltskin. Brad Ableson will serve as co-director.
In a recent interview with Collider, Murphy said, “We started doing [‘Shrek 5’] months ago.” Murphy added, “I did this. I recorded the first act, and we’ll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up. ‘Shrek’ is coming out and Donkey’s gonna have his own movie. We’re gonna do Donkey as well. So we’re gonna do a ‘Shrek,’ and we’re doing a Donkey [movie].”
Based on the book by William Steig, the original anti-fairy tale, the Shrek franchise consists of four main films: “Shrek” (2001), “Shrek 2” (2004), “Shrek the Third” (2007), and “Shrek Forever After” (2010), with a combined worldwide box office collection of over $3.5 billion.
The film is produced by franchise returner Gina Shay and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri.
