‘Spider-Punk’ Animated Movie in the Works at Sony, with Daniel Kaluuya Set to Return as Hobie Brown

Sony Pictures Animation is developing a Spider-Punk movie.

According to a report by Deadline, Oscar-winner Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah) will return as the voice of Spider-Punk / Hobie Brown and is also co-writing the project with Ajon Singh (Primetime) for the animated spin-off.

Plot details have not yet been revealed, as the project is still in its early development phase. As of now, Sony hasn’t officially announced the Spider-Punk movie. However, Deadline reports that Kaluuya will return to voice Hobie Brown / Spider-Punk, a role he played in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) and is set to reprise in Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Punk (aka Hobie Brown) first appeared during a Spider-Verse crossover event in 2015’s The Amazing Spider-Man #10. Created by writer Dan Slott and artist Olivier Coipel, Spider-Punk is a rebellious version of Spider-Man — one who leans into an anarchistic, anti-establishment attitude, unlike Peter Parker’s more traditional persona.

Residing on Earth-138, Hobie Brown is driven by a desire to dismantle corrupt systems — making him a punk-rock symbol of resistance within the multiverse.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, animated Spider-Woman and Venom films are also reportedly in development. Sony is finally utilizing its Spider-Man characters. For now, Spider-Man: Brand New Day starring Tom Holland and the Spider-Noir series starring Nicolas Cage are in production.

Across the Spider-Verse is the second film in Sony Pictures Animation’s acclaimed Spider-Verse trilogy. The first, Into the Spider-Verse, won an Oscar and grossed over $394M globally. Across the Spider-Verse topped that with $690M and another Oscar nomination. The final chapter, Beyond the Spider-Verse, is set for release on June 25, 2027.
