Director Takashi Yamazaki aims to feature Godzilla battling another kaiju in a sequel to ‘Godzilla Minus One.’

Yamazaki wants Godzilla to battle another monster in a sequel to ‘Godzilla Minus One,’ aiming for a serious tone with human drama in kaiju fights.

Speaking to Empire, Yamazaki said, “I don’t know that anyone has pulled off a more serious tone of kaiju-versus-kaiju with human drama, and that challenge is something that I’d like to explore.” Yamazaki added, “But, given Minus One’s clear focus on its human story, keeping the carnage and the character in balance would be essential for the director.”

Yamazaki continued, “When you have movies that feature [kaiju battles], I think it’s very easy to put the spotlight and the camera on this massive spectacle, and it detaches itself from the human drama component to make sure that the human drama and whatever’s happening between [the] kaiju both have meaning, and both are able to affect one another in terms of plot development.”

During the Tokyo Comic Con, Yamazaki denied reports from overseas stating that ‘Godzilla Minus One’ had a $15 million budget. He said, “I wish it were that much.”

Produced by Toho Studios and Robot, and distributed by Toho Co., Ltd. It’s the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise, the 33rd from Toho, and the fifth in the Reiwa era. The film stars Ryunosuke Kamiki as Koichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Oishi, Yuki Yamada as Shiro Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki as Sosaku Tachibana, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ota, and Kuranosuke Sasaki as Yoji Akitsu.

Set in post-war Japan, Godzilla Minus One will once again show us a Godzilla that is a terrifying and overwhelming force. Japan, which had already been devastated by the war, faces a new threat with Godzilla, bringing the country from nothing (zero) into the ‘minus.’

The film has earned over $107 million worldwide on a budget of $10–12 million, making it the fifth highest-grossing Japanese film of 2023. It received 12 nominations at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize and was nominated for Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, marking the first Godzilla film to receive an Oscar nomination.
